There's nothing more distressing to a parent than a baby with a dry, sensitive and irritated bum. I recall my daughter, Gabbie, now 26 years old, suffered from a severe case of eczema as a 4 months old baby. I quickly went to my essential oils "bible" and started creating various recipes to combat her skin affliction. After a little independent research and development, I found some of the same ingredients, in different combinations, made an excellent diaper rash cream. I had already discovered the usefulness and ease of lotion bars, so I decided to make one for babies...thus "Baby Bum Bum Bar" was born! I'll share some of the ingredients here:
Mango Butter is virtually odorless, with a nice sweet smell, which blends nicely with my essential oil-ased products. I really wanted to love Shea Butter, but it leaves a very "nutty" scent in my finished product, which many of customers did not seem care for. Mango butter is rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and E.Mango butter is a versatile and commonly used in soap making, skin care, and hair care products. Mango butter is quite similar to shea and cocoa butters in consistency but differs in fatty acid content. Mango butter is a sweet smelling soft butter extracted from kernels of the mango. The mango originates from southern Asia and can be found in warmer tropical climates such as Burma and India. Indigenous people of the rain forest have been reaping the hair and skin care benefits of this magnificent fruit for many centuries. Mango butter has good emollient properties and lends protection against the sun. It is said to prevent drying of the skin and formation of wrinkles. Mango butter also reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores elasticity. Mango butter’s hardness makes it a great butter for stick formulations such as lip balm and lotion bars. It can be used “as is” to provide relief from the dryness of eczema and psoriasis.
Sweet Almond Oil
Almond oil is a mild, hypoallergenic oil that can be safely used even on baby skin. In fact, it is the best massage oil for infants. When gently rubbed into the skin, it gets fully absorbed, making it suitable for after bath application. To enhance absorption, warm the oil to body temperature before application. This natural oil has a slightly nutty smell, which most people find pleasant, but you can mix in a few drops of lavender oil, or any other fragrant essential oil of your choice, to personalize it.
Lavender Essential Oil
The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. The Latin name of lavender is Lavare, which means “to wash”, due to its aroma which has a particularly clean aroma.
Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily through steam distillation. The flowers of lavender are fragrant in nature and have been used for making potpourri for centuries. Traditionally, lavender essential oil has also been used in making perfumes. The oil is very useful inaromatherapy and many aromatic preparations and combinations are made using lavender oil.
Lavender oil blends well with many other essential oils including cedarwood, pine, clary sage, geranium, andnutmeg. Today, lavender essential oil is frequently used in various forms including aromatherapy oil, gels, infusion, lotion, and soaps.
It has tonic, sudorific, emmenagogic, and antispasmodic properties, but it is mainly used for skin care and treatment. It has great anti-inflammatory and vulnerary action, making it helpful with stubborn wounds, acne, ulcers, bed sores, varicose veins, rashes, eczema, and related conditions. It helps soothe sore, inflamed, and itchy skin conditions.
Roman chamomile essential oil can be used to treat skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis. Can also be diluted with coconut oil and apply liberally after a warm bath. It helps the skin retain moisture and prevents skin dryness and scaling. Spot treatment for acne and skin boils involves using full-strength chamomile oil. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties prevent secondary infections that result in scarring. In fact, it is used as a cicatrisant in cosmetic products on account of its ability to make scars fade.
NOTE: As with any treatment, seek the advice of a medical professional before using it, especially where skin sensitivities to certain weeds and flowers are concerned.
